Comparison of different objective functions for parameterization of simple respiration models

چکیده
[1] The eddy covariance measurements of carbon dioxide fluxes collected around the world offer a rich source for detailed data analysis. Simple, aggregated models are attractive tools for gap filling, budget calculation, and upscaling in space and time. Key in the application of these models is their parameterization and a robust estimate of the uncertainty and reliability of their predictions. In this study we compared the use of ordinary least squares (OLS) and weighted absolute deviations (WAD, which is the objective function yielding maximum likelihood parameter estimates with a double exponential error distribution) as objective functions within the annual parameterization of two respiration models: the Q10 model and the Lloyd and Taylor model. We introduce a new parameterization method based on two nonparametric tests in which model deviation (Wilcoxon test) and residual trend analyses (Spearman test) are combined. A data set of 9 years of flux measurements was used for this study. The analysis showed that the choice of the objective function is crucial, resulting in differences in the estimated annual respiration budget of up to 40%. The objective function should be tested thoroughly to determine whether it is appropriate for the application for which the model will be used. If simple models are used to estimate a respiration budget, a trend test is essential to achieve unbiased estimates over the year. The analyses also showed that the parameters of the Lloyd and Taylor model are highly correlated and difficult to determine precisely, thereby limiting the physiological interpretability of the parameters.

A constrained nonlinear optimization method based on nonlinear programming techniques has been applied to map geometry of bedrock of sedimentary basins by inversion of gravity anomaly data. In the inversion, the applying model is a 2-D model that is composed of a set of juxtaposed prisms whose lower depths have been considered as unknown model parameters. The applied inversion method is a nonli...
متن کاملDeveloping a dynamic yield and growth model for saffron under different irrigation regimes
Better irrigation management and more efficient management of crop production require modeling of plant growth and crop yield. More applicable models are usually simple and requires less and accessible inputs. The objective of this study was to develop a model for growth and yield prediction of saffron under various irrigation regimes. In this modeling soil water budget and other simple rel...
متن کاملAutomatic Calibration of HEC-HMS Model Using Multi-Objective Fuzzy Optimal Models
Estimation of parameters of a hydrologic model is undertaken using a procedure called “calibration” in order to obtain predictions as close as possible to observed values. This study aimed to use the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for automatic calibration of the HEC-HMS hydrologic model, which includes a library of different event-based models for simulating the rainfall-runoff pr...

متن کاملDifferent Network Performance Measures in a Multi-Objective Traffic Assignment Problem
Traffic assignment algorithms are used to determine possible use of paths between origin-destination pairs and predict traffic flow in network links. One of the main deficiencies of ordinary traffic assignment methods is that in most of them one measure (mostly travel time) is usually included in objective function and other effective performance measures in traffic assignment are not considere...
